Bill Clinton to headline statewide economic conference in Albany

ALBANY — Former President Bill Clinton will headline a statewide economic development conference next week in Albany.

Clinton is scheduled to keynote a Sept. 27 conference on the regional economic development competition Gov. Andrew Cuomo has set up.

Ten regional councils, including one covering the Capital Region, are writing strategic plans in a bid for up to $40 million of grants and tax credits this year. The conference is one step in the competition, though few other details about it have been released.

The state is holding a ticket lottery for public seating. Lottery registration ends Sept. 20; to enter, go here or get more information at the homepage for the regional councils.

The Capital Region council is co-chaired by Shirley Ann Jackson, president of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, in Troy; and Michael Castellana, CEO of SEFCU, based in Albany.

The council’s next meeting is set for Sept. 30, though no location has been announced. A final, five-year strategic plan for the region is due to the state by mid-November.

Cuomo served in Clinton’s administration from 1993 through 2000, including as head of the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
