Included in the corridor construction is new carpet, wall-covering, ceiling and light fixtures. Both of the men’s and women’s restrooms received a complete overhaul from floor to ceiling.  The exterior standing tenant sign has been given a face-lift, as well as the parking lot which has been completely re-striped and sealed.

Additionally, The Anderson Group is set to continue its lighting upgrade efforts at this building, which have already been completed in both 1 Computer Drive South as well as 125 Wolf Road. The upgrade consists of retrofitting recessed 2×4 fluorescent fixtures to more energy-efficient Lithonia brand housings.  The fixtures are part of a company-wide energy restructuring plan, and can reduce consumption by up to 60 percent.

Included in the construction is a new building façade, a brand new roof, brand new HVAC units, a new awning, new signage, new parking lots, and new exterior glass entry doors.  Additionally, on the interior, the lobby was redesigned to become more open and welcoming, a soffit with recessed lighting was added, as well as a raised center soffit which hangs two brand new chandeliers.  Landscaping enhancements will be completed this summer.

Standard oak flush doors were replaced with high-end cherry hardwood, glass panel, and decorative trimmed doors.  The floors received new ceramic tile, as well as new carpet, while contrasting wall covering was also installed to distinguish the lobby from the hallways.  With the help of Anderson’s regarded contractors, as well as Anderson staff, construction is set to be complete by the first week of June.

He also fired a broadside at Republicans in Congress who he blamed for inaction on White House proposals he said would spur economic growth.

“This is one of the only colleges in the world dedicated to nanotechnology,” Obama, a Democrat, said.

“This school and this community represent the future of our economy.”

“The true engine of job creation in this country is the private sector. It’s not Washington, but we can make it easier for these companies to hire.”

But in a sign the White House is looking ahead to the campaign against Republican Mitt Romney, Obama criticized Congress for failing to act on jobs legislation his administration proposed.

“The Republicans in Congress got together and said, ‘No,’” he said.

“I know it is an election year but it’s not an excuse for inaction.”

He offered a to-do list of items he wants Congress to tackle.

He urged lawmakers to pass legislation to allow homeowners to refinance their homes at a lower rate and to give small businesses a tax break for hiring workers. He also advocates a program to help Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans find jobs.

Obama suggested the burgeoning nanotech industry in the Capital Region could be a model for the nation, noting the presence of GlobalFoundries and IBM.

” I want what’s happening in Albany to happen all across the country,” he said.

HE talked about importance of work being done at the NanoCollege, calling New York is model for his ideas to spur American manufacturing. “We know the true engine of job growth in America is the private sector, not Washington,” the president said.

“Some of the most advanced manufacturing work in the world takes place in upstate New York,” President said.

Earlier, Gov. Andrew Cuomo gave Obama a rousing introduction, telling a crowd at the NanoCollege that the President is responsible for the nation’s financial recovery.

“This nation, this state went through hard times,” Cuomo said.

“We felt the economic pain from one end of this state to the other.” Cuomo said. “There is also no doubt today is a much different day and your leadership has brought this nation through the storm and we thank you.”

Before the speech, Obama and Cuomo toured the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering.

In a clean room, they examined an applied materials chip manufacturing tool.

“This looks like a pretty fancy piece of equipment,” Obama said to students showing off the device.

The President arrived aboard Air Force One shortly before noon at Albany International Airport and made the quick trip to the nanotech center.

Cuomo, Mayor Jerry Jennings and Colonie town Supervisor Paul Mahan were waiting on the tarmac as Obama got off the plane. U.S. Rep. Paul Tonko was with him.

It is the President’s third trip to the region. “The President has been coming to Albany so much, the rest of the state is going to get jealous,” Cuomo joked.

When Obama visited Hudson Valley Community College in 2009, hundreds lined Albany Shaker Road in Colonie to get a glimpse of him. Last year’s visit General Electric’s plant in downtown Schenectady also featured large crowd near the plant.

But there were few people on Albany Shaker on Tuesday. Some huddled in the entrance to The Desmond hotel and planned to run out into the rain when Obama’s motorcade passed.

About 70 people waiting at the rotary outside the main entrance of the Nanotech building were disappointed by the President’s arrival because Obama’s motorcade slipped into an entrance between the rotary and Washington Avenue Extension that is usually locked and gated. The group barely caught a glimpse his car.

“That was anti-climactic,” said Keri Young, of Altamont, who took her three teenagers out of school and pushed her 9-month-old baby in a carriage to see the President’s arrival.

The zoning board of appeals is scheduled to consider the request May 3 at 7 p.m.

The variance is the last regulatory hurdle before the popular specialty grocery chain can open at 79 Wolf Road, its first store in the Albany region.

No opening date has been announced, though the company has said the store would open in the second quarter of this year. A Trader Joe’s spokeswoman did not return messages.

There are no local jobs posted yet on the Trader Joe’s website.

The company wants to build a 270-square-foot freezer/cooler in back of the store. As designed, the attached unit would only be 2 feet away from the property line. A 15-foot setback is required under the zoning code.

The ZBA meets at the Public Operations Center at 347 Old Niskayuna Road.

Columbia Realty New York LLC brokered the deal to bring Trader Joe’s to the Albany region.

A building that once housed OfficeMax has been converted into three storefronts, including a 13,000-square-foot space for Trader Joe’s.

A Sleepy’s mattress store opened last month in one storefront. The third space will be filled by SuperCuts, which is moving from Northway Mall, said Marc Goldstein, president of Columbia Realty.

The retailer, based in suburban Minneapolis, didn’t identify the big-box stores that are closing.

There are two Best Buy stores in the Albany area: Crossgates Mall in Guilderland, and in Wilton.

Officials could not immediately be reached for comment.

The retailer is facing pressure to transform its business in a shifting retail market.

Best Buy Co. In. on Thursday posted a net loss of $4.89 per share for the fourth quarter on less-than-expected revenue of $16.6 billion. Excluding one-time charges, it earned $2.47 a share.

The company said it will continue rolling out its smaller Best Buy Mobile stores.

It has been a rough several months for Best Buy, which is facing increasing competition from the likes of Amazon.com and the shifting habits of smartphone-wielding, price-checking shoppers. It aggressively cut prices to hold onto market share, but same-store sales were still down during the holiday period. It also canceled some online orders during the holidays, sparking customer complaints.

And it faced a high-profile critique of its service and business plan in a Forbes.com story that went viral, prompting CEO Brian Dunn to mount an online personal defense of the company.

The planning commission voted in favor to allow the construction of the 70,000 square foot store and 14-pump gas station on the site of Otto Cadillac, said Joe Nicolla, president of Columbia Development Cos.

“We still have some conditions to meet but the board gave us approval,” Nicolla said. “We hope to be done with those conditions within the next 60 days.”

Nicolla spoke to The Business Review by phone late Tuesday night after the planning commission met. Village officials were not available for comment.

Construction of the store and gas station would take about a year.

Otto Cadillac plans to move to the former Saturn dealership nearby.

The project had been controversial, as some property owners objected to the noise and traffic that will be generated by the development.

Nicolla told the village steps will be taken to minimize the impact, including erecting sound-buffering walls and installing landscaping.

Columbia Development worked with ShopRite to open a store in Niskayuna last fall, and is building two others in Albany and Bethlehem for the New Jersey-based chain.

ShopRite is making an aggressive push to take on the area’s dominant chain, Price Chopper, after a 20-year absence from the area.

“We’re very excited,” Nicolla said of the Colonie site. “We think this is a great addition to the region. Competition is good for the marketplace.”

The village planning commission is meeting at 6:30 p.m., just four days before a deadline it faces to vote on the project, said Pat Hurley, village clerk.

The commissioners must take action within a specified time period after the public comment period ended, Hurley said, unless an extension is approved by the village and the applicant, Columbia Development Cos.

“I expect a vote tonight,” Columbia President Joe Nicolla said.

Planning Board Chairman Chris Dennis could not be reached for comment.

ShopRite wants to build a 70,000-square-foot supermarket and 14-pump gas station on the site of Otto Cadillac. The car dealership, in turn, would move to the former Saturn dealership nearby.

The proposed supermarket has upset some neighbors and property owners who are concerned about the noise and traffic.
Nicolla has said Columbia Development would erect walls and landscaping and take other steps to minimize the impact of the development.

ShopRite is owned by New Jersey-based Wakefern Food Corp., which is returning to the Albany area after a 20-year absence.
A ShopRite opened in Niskayuna last fall. Two others are being built, one in Albany and one in Bethlehem.
